Spinnerbait bass

I was out today and caught one that was about 1.25 pounds on the edge of a shoreline grass bed using 12 pound bright green fluorescent colored monofilament fishing line on a 6'6 Medium action spinning bass fishing rod with spinning gear. Also, Today I had a bass turn and wake head on for my spinnerbait freshwater bass lure but missed it.....

My Big Fish Tournament at Piney run park

Well, I caught a 1.53 lb. largemouth that was 14.5 inches at about 9:45 a.m. deadsticking a Watermelon/chartreuse laminate 5" Gary yamamoto senko soft lure, that was the only bite of the day for me. I fished from 7 to 11. I threw spinnerbaits, buzzbaits, senko type fishing lures for bass......... But only 1. I was fishing from shore, but the guys in the boats who went up lake to the Dam and threw a senko brought back 3 and 4 pounders that ended up filling the top 2 places. I focused on shallow water mainly. On this bass fishing trip I only saw 1 bass cruising the shallows the whole morning. I Tried coves with pads and shallow water docks and flats. The one bass I did catch was from one of the fishing plat forms and one of the guys I talked to said that most bass he either heard or saw being caught from shore were in super skinny water. I tried skipping my senko lure under docks..............

Big bass Flippin'

Take a Dive into Vegetation with Rage Tail Baits

In the months June, July and August when its really hot and sticky many bass are heading to thick vegetation along with other types of cover. As the water warms from intense sunlight, aquatic plants such as pond duckweed and milfoil become more dense, which attracts bass. Bass will gather under this dense vegetation and you can present your soft baits to them in a variety of ways. You can locate the better grass beds and eliminate not so good ones in a variety of ways using heavy tungsten worm fishing weights or lead fishing sinkers to punch through the cover with lures such as the Rage Space Monkey and the Rage Smokin’ Rooster made by Strike king lures who also makes the strike king rage tail craw. You can also flip or pitch this set up into any visible holes in the cover using lures such as fishing jigs.

A good grass bed will often have baitfish around and if there is wood nearby it sometimes improves the chances for it to hold bass. To “test” a grass bed for bass I like to punch the vegetation with a strike king fishing Hack Attack jig bait, choosing the weight or size depending on how thick the cover is. When using the Hack Attack, I will add a trailer such as the Strike king rage tail Rage Hawg or Strike king rage tail Rage Lobster and after punching thru the cover, I’ll jig it up and down vertically, or shake and hop it to draw the strike. My setup for fishing cover with Rage lures is heavy braid, fluorocarbon, or Monofilament with a 7’6 Bass pro shops Graphite Flippin’ stick with a 7:1:1 Gear ratio bait caster. When punching through heavy vegetation with lures such as the Smokin’ Rooster, I would recommend using tungsten weights. When you feel a bite, make sure you are prepared for the fish to run and set the hook.

When your fishing Rage Baits in cover you should use the appropriate pound test line so you can horse the bass out of the Heavy cover. While working the bait I like to keep me rod pointing down towards my lure and the cover and shake it steadily in the cover. When you feel a bite, wait less than a second and then set the hook hard. If you want to add more bulk to your jig when flipping heavy cover try adding a Smokin’ Rooster or Rage Lobster by threading it onto the hook of your jig.ith the Right conditions, These techniques can pay off with some big bags of bass. When available, I like to flip soft plastics and Jigs under overhanging bushes and trees and let them jiggle. Usually a bass will take my jig or soft plastic as it falls or once it lands on the bottom and will run with it out of the vegetation, tree, or bush. A good time to target bushes and sunken trees with weighted soft plastics or jigs is during the postspawn.

In summary, learning to fish cover and thick vegetation can be very rewarding and can produce big fish. Sometimes, it may take a few times to find that perfect patch of vegetation, but when you do it will pay big dividends and most importantly BIG BASS.

Strike King Ocho
Nothing has recently hit the soft Stickbait market Since the Yamamato Senko, and now that can no longer be said, because now the Strike King Ocho has taken the Yamamato senko’s Place in the Soft Plastics market. First off let me say that the Strike King Ocho is deadly on Spawning Bass, because if you leave it in the nest long enough the bass will get agitated with it and carry it out of the nest, giving you the chance to set the hook. I recently caught a 16 inch Spawning bass with this tactic. The Ocho comes in two Sizes a 5 inch and a 7 inch, and comes in 10 wonderful colors. The Ocho is a good bait to fish in deep water because it shimmies as it falls. But, When you are fishing it in deep water, you need to watch your line very closely and if it moves off to the Side, SET THE HOOK! I like to Texas rig the Ocho with a 1/0 hook and fish it weightless. This lure is great around shallow water also and have caught some really nice bass doing that. If I had to pick one color to Fish the Ocho In, It would probably be Junebug. The Ocho can imitate a dying bait fish falling down into deeper water and many other things.. One thing that is very unique about the Ocho is that it has eight sides and is chuck full of salt and has coffee scent to help the fish hold on Longer. This bait can be used in heavy grass and vegetation and can be flipped into vegetation. Another deadly way to fish the Ocho I just recently discovered is to Carolina Rig the Ocho. Also, If you want to have even more intense action with the Ocho you can fish it weighted, which will just make it fall faster, which is even more enticing to bass. Over all, The Strike King Ocho is very Versatile and can be fished in many different Situations and is great when the bass are deep. Think again if you think this is just a piece of plastic, because its a lot more than that, So don’t let your eyes fool you. This is a Lure you don’t want to move after you cast cast it out and let it do the rest. Almost anyone can catch fish with the Strike King Ocho, from the youngest to the oldest, this Lure can work magic for anyone. If you want to Carolina rig this lure, use a short leader. I like to fish the Strike King Ocho on 8-pound fluorocarbon, but if you fish it in vegetation, use heavier line. The Ocho can be fished on a dropshot or a Shaky head and should be fished with a 2/0, 3/0, or 4/0 hook. And Advantage of using the strike King Ocho is its price, The Yamamato senko costs $5.29, and the Strike King Ocho costs $4.99. The Strike King Ocho has very soft texture which makes it feel reel to the bass and when you open the package you will notice the ocho has a Strong Coffee scent. . The glitter in the Ocho helps the sides of the Ocho reflect light under water/.
You can purchase the strike King Ocho at Bass Pro shops, Cabelas, or any other Strike King dealer.

Big Bass can come from small places

As I continue my quest for trophy bass I realize that big bass can come from small places. I have caught a Trophy Bass in a small, private Virginia farm pond In early Maryland. I have also caught 1-2 pound bass in Small run-off ponds near my house in the Months of June and July.
